Title
Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Religion: The Illusion Has a Future
Abstract

Several contemporary object relations theorists have amended Freud's treatment of religion as exclusively pathological. Broader object relational perspectives acknowledge the possibility of both a healthy and unhealthy line of religious development. Rather than every religious illusion necessarily dying of disenchantment as a person matures, one's religious beliefs may undergo continuous transformation and revision. Illusion is newly regarded as an essential and psychically useful component of human development.
