Title
A Good Monastery is Hard to Find: A Decade of Sociological Research on Evangelical Monasticism
Abstract

If it were easy, or only somewhat difficult, to be a spiritual formation
committed evangelical living a life of historic monasticism, I would
be much farther along such a path at this point, a couple of decades into
adulthood. Being around other people brings me deep delight. Organizing
opportunities to bring people together provides intense satisfaction. I run
headfirst towards any spiritual formation practice that invites a deeper connection
with God. These pursuits are so central to my being that I wound
up writing a memoir, Flirting with Monasticism: Finding God on Ancient
Paths, published by InterVarsity Press eleven years ago. A promise that
both opens and concludes that book, remains one I hold on to with great
hope: “If you long for such formation [monastic life], God will not fail to
provide you opportunities to have that desire met.”
